McAfee AntiVirus Plus Software – Big Name, Big Results

Advertising

McAfee has been a major name in the antivirus arena for a number of years and remains in that position because it delivers an array of quality products. McAfee Antivirus Plus continues this trend, but it also seems like the big name might be starting to influence the company in a negative way. There are a variety of weak points in the release this year, which could turn away potential repeat customers. When it comes down to it though, any antivirus program must be examined by three major criteria: price, protection and service.

Price
With an MSRP of $49.99, McAfee is above average in price for antivirus software. There are still more expensive programs out there, but the seemingly high price tag will turn off many users. On the other hand, when you consider that McAfee includes as many services as it does, the price seems to fit more on the level of full security suites, which McAfee could certainly contend with.

Protection
McAfee consistently performs well across the board, but in this year’s release it seems to leave a little bit wanting. Malware blocking was largely effective and cleanup up malware was only slightly weaker. Still, with such a large price tag users come to expect more. One major strength that can be offered through McAfee though is that it will help users that have suffered from serious malware on their system in the past. With the CleanBoot CD that is included, even systems that have serious malware issues will be eligible for this install.
Additionally, the anti-phishing and firewall services both perform adequately, but lack a certain pop that would make them worth the money. The best way to look at the overall protection would be to say that it is good, but does not stand out from the crowd in any way.
Service
Of course, the overall quality of the malware protection could arguably be rectified by the wide array of services included, as well as the always-available tech support. With such a big name to back it up, McAfee representatives will easily guide you through most of the problems you encounter during or after installation. More importantly, the software includes so many different add-ons that it could probably be called “McAfee Internet Security Suite” instead.
Some of these services include: firewall, anti-phishing, SiteAdvisor, remote management, system tune up and vulnerability scan. Many of these features are not found in other virus protection software, while others are found only in more expensive security suites.
Overall Impression
Overall, McAfee performs decently well, but simply doesn’t live up to its name. All around, it is on the expensive end of virus software and provides only slightly above average performance. Then again, it does include more extras than most software, so if you are a fan of all of the add-ons included, you may want to check it out. In the end, it comes down to preference, but there are definitely programs out there that will do the job better.
